This Day in Guelph History: April 23, 1879

To commemorate Canada’s sesquicentennial and Guelph’s 190th anniversary, Guelph Museums and the University of Guelph have teamed up to present This Day in Guelph, Ontario, Canada History – Old news gets a modern twist as we revisit news stories from the past 150 years.


April 23, 1879

Having grown to a population of 10,000, Guelph was inaugurated as Ontario’s ninth city. Reportedly there were 10,000 people involved in the ensuing celebrations. A mayoral announcement proclaimed Guelph “The Royal City.”
