Celebrate Culture Days with Chew Chew at the Choo Choo

GUELPH, ON, September 25, 2017 – Locomotive 6167 in downtown Guelph will be the centre of attention Saturday, September 30 with railway-inspired music, food and all-ages activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of locomotive’s arrival in Guelph.

Visitors will meet 6167 restoration volunteers and learn firsthand about the historic locomotive. Guelph Historical Railway Association will be onsite with interactive displays and table-top steam engines. Local artist Debbie Thompson-Wilson will bring her own artistic flair to the event with personalized calligraphy train tickets. String and brass band, Frog & Henry, will perform a 45- minute set of 1900s dance and jazz music at 11:30 a.m.

Chef Rabih Abouhalka will be bringing the “Chew Chew” to the “Choo Choo” by serving up a unique gourmet-inspired menu from Guelph’s newest food truck, Nomad Chef.

Locomotive 6167, built by Montreal Locomotive Works in 1940, was one of 203 “Northern” locomotives used by Canadian National Railways (CN) for passenger and freight service.  After retiring her to a Toronto roundhouse in September 1964, CN presented Locomotive 6167 to the City of Guelph in 1967 in honour of Canada’s centennial. Guelph city council established the Locomotive 6167 Restoration Committee in 2002, comprised of railway enthusiasts and City staff. The restoration was completed in 2014 and Locomotive 6167 became part of the Guelph Museums collection.

Culture Days is a nationwide arts and culture movement to raise awareness and engage Canadians in their communities. Admission will be free at Guelph Civic Museum and McCrae House all weekend long to celebrate Culture Days, September 29 to October 1.

Festivities begin at the Locomotive 6167 site at 11:00 a.m. and will wrap up at 1:30 p.m.

Locomotive 6167 is located on Farquhar Street, across the street from Guelph Chamber of Commerce.
