Artist’s Inspiration: Maria Drazilov

We invited local artists to respond to the theme From Coast to Coast to Coast as part of our Wall of Art series, a quarterly juried art show produced in partnership with Guelph Arts Council. The submissions received were incredibly varied, as each artist brought a truly unique perspective to the theme. For this blog series, we asked the artists to share their inspiration and the story that their piece tells.

When I think of my father, the patriarch of our family, I imagine him to be the embodiment of an old tall tree from which we, his children, branch out from. As a young man, he established roots here in Canada, and brought forth several generations of new life. Seeking adventure and a sense of belonging, he left his home in Serbia and emigrated in the late 1950’s. As a first generation Canadian, I have always been sympathetic to the immigrant experience and been grateful that both my dad and mom settled here.

The Patriarch is on display at the Guelph Civic Museum until April 9.
