Guelph Museums’ week of remembrance commemorates 100th anniversary of Armistice

GUELPH, ON, November 1, 2018: Guelph Museums will mark Remembrance Day, and the centennial of the signing of the Armistice ending the First World War, with a week of activities at the Civic Museum and McCrae House leading up to November 11.

The World Remembers, a digital memorial, will display the names of 1,003,167 names of those killed in 1918, including those registered as official war deaths from 1919 to 1922. Names will be displayed via monitor at McCrae House during regular museum hours, Tuesday to Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Guelph Civic Museum, Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. until the conclusion of the presentation at sunset on November 11.

Sunday, November 4, the annual Thank a Veteran event will be held at McCrae House. Visitors will have an opportunity to visit and exchange stories with local veterans from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Canadian musicians Mike Ford (Moxy Früvous) and Murray Foster (Moxy Früvous, Great Big Sea) revive their musical remembrance ‘Sons of ’17’ Saturday, November 10 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available in advance at guelphmuseums.wpengine.com.

Sunday, November 11, a Sunrise Piping in McCrae Memorial Gardens. An international piping initiative, organized by the National Piping Centre of Scotland to mark the time of the signing of the armistice 1918, the Guelph Pipe Band will be performing “The Battle’s Over” at 6 a.m.

The Royal Canadian Legion, Colonel John McCrae Memorial Branch 234, will present a Remembrance Day service at McCrae Memorial Gardens, adjacent to McCrae House, starting at 9 a.m.

Also on Remembrance Day at McCrae House, Honey Novick, director of the Creative Vocalization Studio and the UNESCO-endorsed “New Songs for Peace” project, presents reflections through poetry and spoken word with readings set to run from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Admission is by donation on Remembrance Day, November 11.

Guelph Civic Museum is located at 52 Norfolk Street. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

McCrae House is located at 108 Water Street. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m. Extended McCrae House hours on Remembrance Day, November 11, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
