Sights, sounds and good vibrations this fall at Guelph Museums

GUELPH, September 13, 2019: Guelph Museums celebrates the opening of two exhibitions — Into the Light: Eugenics and Education in Southern Ontario and VibraFusionLab: Bridging Practices in Accessibility, Art, and Communication — Friday, September 27 at the Civic Museum during Culture Days Weekend.

Into the Light brings southern Ontario’s hidden history of eugenics to light. Through stories of survival, it reveals that eugenics meant to “better” humankind. Yet, it has left a legacy of segregation, cultural assimilation, and sterilization that continues today.

Co-curated by Mona Stonefish, Peter Park, Dolleen Tisawaii’ashii Manning, Evadne Kelly, Seika Boye, and Skye Stonefish. Presented by Guelph Museums in partnership with Bodies in Translation: Activist Art, Technology and Access to Life at Re•Vision: The Centre for Art and Social Justice, University of Guelph.

VibraFusionLab allows you to experience sound and vibration technologies through art installations by David Bobier, Lindsay Fisher, Marla Hlady, Ellen Moffat, Gordon Monahan, Alison O’Daniel, and Lynx Sainte-Marie. By making sound tangible through touch, this exhibition aims to change public perceptions of difference and disability.

Presented in partnership with VibraFusionLab, an innovative centre for vibrotactile research and creative practice based in London, Ontario.

Both exhibitions are on display from September 14 until March 1, 2020.

During the exhibition reception remarks, there will be ASL interpreters present. The interpreters will be wearing a badge that says “ASL Interpreter.”

In addition to new exhibitions, we’re celebrating the 10th anniversary of Culture Days, and we’re celebrating big! Join us for special activities, loot bags, cake, and performance by Brad Woods and The Great Wooden Trio as part of the Fourth Friday concert series.

Opening remarks are set for 6 p.m. Friday, September 27, followed by performance by Brad Woods and The Great Wooden Trio at 7 p.m.

Admission on Fourth Fridays is free from 5 to 9 p.m.
