Guelph remembers fallen First World War soldiers through digital memorial

GUELPH, ON, October 5, 2017: Guelph Museums joins 60 other locations across Canada and around the world in presenting The World Remembers, a nationwide commemoration of the First World War. Leading up to Remembrance Day, a digital memorial at McCrae House will display the names of 700,000 people killed in action in 1917, including 20,400 Canadians, serving at Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele and Hill 70. The World Remembers is an initiative of remembrance, education, and international understanding.

Names of the fallen First World War soldiers from Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, the United States, Turkey, Belgium, Australia, the Czech Republic, Italy, New Zealand, Slovenia, China and the former British Indian Army will appear one by one.

Each name will appear at an exact day, hour and minute found on The World Remembers website, theworldremembers.org. Viewers are encouraged to search the names to explore the history behind each name.

The World Remembers is a Canadian non-profit organization whose purpose is to build and facilitate this initiative.

Names will be displayed via monitor at McCrae House National Historic Site during regular museum hours, Tuesday to Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Names will also be projected at Guelph Civic Museum during Remembrance Week, November 5 until the conclusion of the presentation at sunset on November 11.

McCrae House is located at 108 Water Street, Guelph. Guelph Civic Museum is located at 52 Norfolk Street, Guelph.
