Guelph Museums Art Show Revisits In Flanders Fields
Reception and Fourth Friday Concert on March 27
GUELPH, ON, March 17, 2015: Since its publication 100 years ago, John McCrae’s In Flanders Fields has inspired responses from artists of all kinds. The poem has been set to music; answered in verse; and transformed into large-scale works of installation art.
Now the poem is being interpreted anew by Guelph and Wellington County artists as part of a new Guelph Museums iuried art show, entitled Remembering In Flanders Fields. The exhibit, which opens on March 27 at the Civic Museum, is one of a number of initiatives Guelph Museums is planning to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the poem’s writing.
The displayed artwork explores McCrae’s poem in a variety of styles and mediums. “We were thrilled with the submission we received,” says Guelph Museums manager Tammy Adkin. “Each artist brought a unique perspective to the subject-matter. It shows that the poem still speaks to people 100 years later.”
There will be an opening reception for Remembering In Flanders Fields at the Guelph Civic Museum on Friday, March 27, with remarks at 6.30 pm. Following the remarks, Norman Liota, a Guelph-based classical guitarist, will play a concert as part of Guelph Museums’ Fourth Fridays series.
Admission to the Guelph Civic Museum is free on Fourth Fridays from 5:00 to 9:00 pm.
