Giddy up, we’re off to the races! In this episode of It Happened Here, Education Coordinator Ken Irvine explores the history of horse racing in Guelph beginning in 1847.

“In Guelph’s early years when horses were the main source of transportation, horse racing was very popular and provided an economic boom for the city. One of the first records of organized horse racing in Guelph was in the summer of 1847. The race was sponsored by the Guelph Turf club. The racecourse was to be on St. Georges Parsonage lands…”
