SUMMARY:Backyard Theatre: We Lived\, Felt Dawn\, Saw Sunset Glow
DESCRIPTION:We Lived\, Felt Dawn\, Saw Sunset Glow is a concert piece for voice and guitar created by Juno-nominated and Queen’s Diamond Jubilee-awarded composer/playwright Mike Ford.  Described as a “solo troubadour opera\,” it was commissioned by Guelph Museums for events commemorating the 80th Anniversary of Liberation in Europe\, including this world debut at Backyard Theatre. \nConceived as an integral composition reflecting no specific real-life individual\, battle\, war\, era\, or planet\, We Lived\, Felt Dawn\, Saw Sunset Glow is a musical-lyrical exploration of thoughts\, feelings\, and experiences of a fictional warrior\, inspired by soldiers’ writings from across the centuries. \nMuseum and cash bar open one hour prior to showtime. The performance is approximately 60 minutes. \nThis is Ford’s third original piece presented at Backyard Theatre\, after Sons of ’17 and McCrae in the Mirror\, works that went on to tour Europe in extraordinary Guelph Museums-curated memorial adventures. \nTickets available via Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:McCrae House Backyard Theatre
DESCRIPTION:What are the causes of war? Is war simply human nature? Is the goal of world peace realistic? Artivist and educator Rhapsodius (aka Andrew Craig) presents a one-person\, one-act show that poses these questions and more\, and offers possible answers. “War and Peace: Songs and Monologues” features some of the greatest songs about war and peace composed in the 20th century\, by artists such as Stevie Wonder\, Marvin Gaye\, Bob Dylan\, John Lennon\, and Bob Marley. Rhapsodius weaves together these songs with deeply considered monologues that draw equally from the ancient writings of Sun Tzu as well as from contemporary authors such as Gwynne Dyer\, Margaret McMillan\, Pema Chodron and the Dalai Lama. “War and Peace: Songs and Monologues” aims to educate\, enlighten\, uplift and inspire in equal measure\, and leave you with the sense that a peaceful world is indeed possible\, and that we can co-create it. \nTickets are $25 each\, available on Eventbrite or by calling 519-836-1221. \nPLEASE NOTE: War And Peace: Songs And Monologues is performed outside in the backyard of McCrae House. Please dress according to weather conditions. We recommend casual clothing and comfortable shoes. The show will go on through most weather conditions. In the case of severe inclement weather\, a performance may be delayed or cancelled. If a performance is cancelled\, your tickets will be automatically refunded\, and we will assist you in securing tickets for another performance\, if possible. \n \n

SUMMARY:Backyard Theatre: Ridge
DESCRIPTION:Ridge\nWritten by Brendan McLeod\nDirected by Julia Course\nMusic by Brendan McLeod & Adrian Glynn\nBackyard Theatre returns to McCrae House this summer with a solo version of RIDGE. \nOften called “the battle that made Canada\,” Vimy Ridge resulted in over 10\,000 Canadian casualties. \nIn RIDGE\, Brendan McLeod examines misconceptions and varying perspectives around the battle of Vimy Ridge\, while drawing parallels to other formative events in our nation’s past. Featuring innovative musical interpretations of First World War soldier songs (often referred to as ‘Trench Songs’)\, RIDGE probes difficult yet necessary questions about how and why we grieve. Trench songs were written by frontline soldiers during the First World War. Essentially protest songs\, they were often parodies of well-known tunes. To accompany the storytelling and thought-provoking narrative\, McLeod also performs a selection of these songs on multiple instruments. The result is a poignant and stripped-back collection of work that emphasizes the emotional content of the lyrics and continues the long tradition of folk music reshaping songs over time — the same way soldiers reshaped these songs in the trenches. \nA vivid\, kinetic ride through history\, as well as an intimate\, personal examination of our connection to the past\, RIDGE is a visceral work that passionately argues against the exploitation of young lives. \nGet your tickets on Eventbrite! \nAbout the Artists\nBrendan McLeod\nMcLeod is the author of a novel\, a poetry collection\, and six theatre shows. His band\, The Fugitives\, has been nominated for a JUNO\, as well as six Canadian Folk Music Awards. He is a two-time literary finalist for the KM Hunter Awards. \nJulia Course\nCourse is a veteran theatre actor with over 15 years of professional theatre acting experience\, primarily at the Shaw Festival\, as well as a history of creating and producing independent theatre productions with the group Theatre Animal. Her next directorial project is next year’s OVER THE RIDGE\, which combines the text from RIDGE with contemporary dance. \nAbout the Show\nThe Text\nThough not exhaustive\, the main sources for this work are: Vimy\, Pierre Berton; Victory at Vimy\, Ted Barris; The Vimy Trap\, Ian McKay and Jamie Swift; Vimy Ridge: A Canadian Reassessment\, edited by Michael Bechtold\, Geoffrey Hayes\, Andrew Iarocci; Into the Blizzard\, Michael Winter; Trench Warfare\, Sue Bradford Edwards; Vimy: The Battle and The Legend\, Tim Cook; Liberalism\, Surveillance\, and Resistance: Indigenous Communities in Western Canada\, 1877-1927\, Keith Douglas Smith. \nThe Songs\nAll songs are First World War-era songs\, predominantly written by soldiers. In most cases\, these were parodies\, which used the melodies of well-known songs at the time\, the lyrics rewritten to reflect the soldiers’ circumstances. McLeod has rewritten the melodies and arrangements\, both to more readily access the emotions of the lyrics\, but also to continue folk music’s long tradition of reshaping songs over time\, the same way soldiers reshaped these songs in the trenches. \nThe Readings\nThe readings are verbatim soldier accounts from the First World War\, as well as historical accounts taken from the texts listed above. \nPRESS\n“Poignant and sobering” \n— The Globe and Mail (Top 10 Arts Pick\, 2020) \n“Serves to give the sacrifices of those who served and died a human dimension beyond mythology.” \n— Vancouver Sun \n“Riveting…The way history was meant to be told.” \n— Entertainment Vancouver \nhttp://guelphmuseums.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Brenand-McLedo-Video-Greeting-1.mp4

SUMMARY:Backyard Theatre: McCrae in the Mirror
DESCRIPTION:Image: The ruins of the medieval Cloth Hall in Ypres\, September 1917\, by Frank Hurley\nThursday through Saturday\, July 21 – 23| 7 PM\nThursday through Saturday\, July 28 – 30 | 7 PM\nSaturday matinee\, July 23 and 30| 2 PM \nMcCrae in the Mirror is a dramatic flight of fancy inspired by the life\, work and renowned storytelling panache of Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. Playwright Mike Ford animates well and lesser-known aspects of Guelph’s most famous son in a provocative voyage through the mists of the past. \nWritten and performed by Mike Ford. \nMcCrae House is the birthplace of Lt. Col. John McCrae\, the doctor\, soldier\, and poet who wrote In Flanders Fields. This show provides an opportunity to connect with the legacy of John McCrae in a contemporary and compelling way\, set against the backdrop of the historic and beautiful limestone cottage in which he was born. \nRunning Time: 75 minutes (no intermission) \nAbout Mike Ford: \nMIKE FORD is a franco-Ontarian singer-songwriter\, playwright\, and educator.  Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal-awarded and Juno-nominated for his bilingual Canadian history Troubadour concerts and repertoire\, Mike co-created the musical Chelsea Sunrise (Theatre Sheridan)\, recorded an album of original Great Lakes songs with David Francey\, toured with The Arrogant Worms\, sold over a quarter million albums with Moxy Früvous\, and once crashed through a stained-glass window at a Buffalo record store. \nMcCrae in the Mirror is Mike’s third original work of theatre to be presented internationally by Guelph Museums\, after Sons of ’17 (originally created for The Governor General’s History Awards) and John Galt & The Instant City (commissioned\, as was ‘McCrae…’ by Guelph Museums).  Mike is now in his 20th year with Prologue Performing Arts\, who present his in-school and online concerts throughout Ontario. He wishes he could play flamenco guitar. \nThis McCrae 150 initiative is generously supported by Ontario Cultural Attractions Fund and the Musagetes Fund\, Guelph Community Foundation. \n\nTickets are available through Eventbrite or 519-836-1221.
