SUMMARY:Fourth Friday: Gary Diggins and Luc Julian
DESCRIPTION:Step into an evening of immersive sound and soulful reflection as Gary Diggins and Luc Julian present Music as Medicine\, a concert that explores the healing power of music through global traditions. This unique performance features instruments and sound practices passed down by knowledge keepers from cultures across Africa\, India\, and beyond – affirming the timeless truth that sound can nourish the soul. \nDiggins and Julian have studied with mentors and wisdom holders around the world\, learning to use music not just as art\, but as a tool for wellbeing. Their collaboration blends acoustic textures\, meditative rhythms\, and deep listening to create a space of connection and renewal. \nOn Fourth Fridays\, admission to the Civic Museum is by donation starting at 5 p.m.\, with performances beginning at 7 p.m. Cash bar. \nAbout The Artists:\nGary Diggins is an expressive arts practitioner\, educator\, and author who has spent over 40 years exploring the intersection of sound and healing. His musical path has taken him across continents—from India to Africa\, Europe to Israel\, and even to the stage of Carnegie Hall. His work blends acoustic world instruments with deep listening and therapeutic intention\, offering audiences a unique and transformative experience. \nFrom an early age\, Luc Julian was immersed in a world where spirituality\, music\, and cultural exchange were deeply intertwined. Raised in Sierra Leone\, West Africa\, where his parents were engaged in community work\, Julian developed a deep respect for diverse traditions. Upon returning to Canada\, he took up the cello at the age of seven\, an instrument he played with natural ease and devotion. During his studies at Wilfrid Laurier University\, he found himself disillusioned by the competitive pressures of the classical music world. Searching for a deeper connection to music beyond technical mastery\, he left University and traveled to St. Louis in Senegal\, where he began his first lessons on the Kora\, a 21-string West African harp. After completing his studies with cellist Paul Pulford\, Julian moved to Toronto\, where he became deeply involved in a range of musical scenes as well as studying Soundwork with Gary Diggins. \nJulian and Diggins performed together at Carnegie Hall as part of  the New York Global Music Competition in 2023.

SUMMARY:Military Lecture: The Cold War in Canada by Dr. Sara Matthews
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that the Region of Waterloo is home to a Cold War nuclear shelter? Built in 1966 and designed by the same architectural firm responsible for the CN Tower\, the bunker was constructed to ensure the continuity of government in the event of a catastrophic nuclear strike. Join Dr. Sara Matthews for a discussion about how communities imagined nuclear survival and the role of Canadian Cold War propaganda. Together we will explore the visual communication of public safety and consider the question\, “how is citizenship constructed in relation to threat?” \nDoors open at 6:30 pm and the presentation starts at 7:00 pm\, followed by a question period. \nThe lecture premiered in-person at the Civic Museum\, and online via our Facebook livestream. The recorded conversation is available on Facebook\, YouTube\, and our Museum Everywhere Portal. Guelph Museums’ Military Lecture series is presented in partnership with the Laurier Centre for the Study of Canada. \nWatch The Recording\n\nAbout the Speaker\n \nDr Sara Matthews is Associate Professor in Communication Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University. Working in the field of critical security studies\, her projects explore the relations between visual culture and martial politics as well as how communities craft creative modes of relationality and survival in response to practices of state securitization.

SUMMARY:Portraits – Stories of Black Canadian Military Service
DESCRIPTION:From pre-Confederation conflicts through to the war in Afghanistan\, Black Canadians have a proud tradition of military service. They have fought and died for freedom abroad\, even as they have struggled against discrimination at home. \nPortraits – Stories of Black Canadian Military Service\, a new travelling exhibition circulated by the Canadian War Museum\, celebrates the contributions of Black Canadians in the military through compelling accounts of service and sacrifice from across the country. \nThe exhibition highlights the contributions and experiences of Black men and women from Nova Scotia and southern Ontario — two historic centres of Black migration — as well as from other parts of Canada. \nVisitors will recognize familiar names and events\, such as the story of William Hall\, one of Canada’s first recipients of the Victoria Cross. They will also discover many lesser-known stories\, like that of Connie and Kathleen Brown\, twin sisters who served during the Second World War. \nGuelph Museums has developed a unique\, localized chapter within the national narrative of the touring exhibition. This addendum focuses on the history of Black military service and migration to Guelph\, Ontario\, including the story of First World War servicemen Henry Francis Courtney\, Victor Goines\, Gordon Goines\, and Tom Malott who served in the No. 2 Construction Battalion\, the largest all-Black unit in Canadian military history. \nPortraits – Stories of Black Canadian Military Service was developed by the Canadian War Museum\, Ottawa in partnership with the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia\, Halifax and the Niagara Military Museum\, Niagara Falls. \n\n\n\n	Molly Lamb Bobak Private Roy\, Canadian Women’s Army Corps\,1946 \nBeaverbrook Collection of War Art Canadian War Museum CWM 19710261-1626\n\nMolly Lamb Bobak Soldat Roy\, Service féminin de l’armée canadienne\, 1946 \nCollection Beaverbrook d’art militaire Musée canadien de la guerre MCG 19710261-1626 \n\n\n	Alvie Burden \nCourtesy of Eric Brunt \n\nAlvie Burden \nAvec l’aimable autorisation d’Eric Blunt\n \n\n\n	David Johnson in Korea \nNiagara Military Museum\n\nDavid Johnson en Corée \nNiagara Military Museum \n \n\n\n	Connie and Kathleen Brown \nNiagara Military Museum\n\nConnie et Kathleen Brown \nNiagara Military Museum

SUMMARY:Reclaiming my SHYNE: an invitation to Black women\, Indigenous women and women of colour to embrace rest and cultivate more peace in their lives
DESCRIPTION:This 2-hour workshop centers around the maxim that rest is an act of resistance\, a radical form of self-care\, and a powerful tool for Black\, Indigenous\, and women/femmes of colour to reclaim their lives from the constant pressure to perform and produce. Inspired by the work of Black feminist thinkers like Tricia Hersey\, Audre Lorde\, and bell hooks\, we will explore the importance of rest\, its connection to resistance\, and practical ways to cultivate peace within our lives. This workshop will adopt an embodied approach\, inviting participants to engage in this powerful discussion of rest and reclamation. Participants can expect to: \n\nEngage in grounding\, meditative exercises that encourage deep rest and self-reflection.\nExplore the ways that hustle culture impacts their well-being and presents obstacles to rest.\nReflect on their own cultural practices that resist capitalism through rest\, play\, and community.\nDevelop practical tools to prioritize rest and ease in their daily lives.\n\nThis workshop is open to self-identified Black women/femmes\, Indigenous women/femmes\, and women/femmes of colour seeking to reclaim their sense of peace\, balance\, and self-care while actively resisting the destructive demands of capitalism and hustle culture. Participants are encouraged to bring their own “rest supports” to the workshop – this may include blankets\, pillows\, stuffed animals\, slippers\, or any other items that help them cultivate a sacred space during this rest practice. \nTickets can be purchased on Eventbrite \n  \nAbout the facilitator:\nAlexis Charles (she/her) is a passionate and visionary change-maker with over fourteen years of experience in the education and community development fields. Having been born and raised in the GTA\, she now lives in Guelph where she enjoys creating and leading opportunities that celebrate Black\, African/Caribbean\, and diverse identities in our community. Alexis is the founder and owner of SHYNE Body Butter\, a wellness brand that supports young women and femmes in the Guelph/Kitchener-Waterloo area through simple skincare\, education\, and empowerment. Her past experience includes serving as the Coordinator of Cultural Diversity Programs at the University of Guelph and Director of Programming with the Guelph Black Heritage Society. She has a Master of Education in Anti-Oppression Education and Community Development\, and is committed to addressing educational equities and supporting those traditionally underserved in academia. Alexis also loves to travel\, and lived in South Korea for three years. Some things that bring her joy are rollerskating\, HIIT workouts\, old school dancehall music\, and her cat Zora 🙂 \nImportant Note: On Wednesday\, May 28 construction commenced on Cork Street between Norfolk Street and Dublin Street North which will take about five weeks to complete\, weather permitting. Access to the Civic Museum from the top of the hill (Cork and Dublin) will be maintained for the duration of the work.\nFull details here

SUMMARY:Sacred Space: Intuitive Nature Sculptures
DESCRIPTION:Sacred spaces are deeply rooted in our lineages as interfaces of our spirits with a place\, an ancestor\, or the divine. They can be anywhere from a woven textile\, a body of water\, a bedroom wall\, or a built structure where community gathers. They are as much an external space rich in meaning as they an internal release\, a place of belonging\, or a connection with kin. \nThis workshop draws from folklore and stories to look at what is held sacred to communities across different cultures\, tensions around the co-opted or appropriated\, and how we can reimagine sacred spaces in uncertain times.\nWe will use materials gathered from the land such as dried flowers\, moss\, seeds and driftwood as well as reclaimed South-Asian fabric\, to create intuitive sculptural pieces that can either live within or remind us of our sacred space.\nAll materials will be provided\, however you are welcome to bring a mug or vessel to create your world in\, along with any materials of personal significance that you would like to incorporate — a rock\, a piece of fabric\, a dried flower\, or a remnant of a place or person. \nThis workshop is suitable for ages 16+. Registration required on Eventbrite.\nPlease feel free to bring your own snacks. \nArtist Bio\nNimra (she/her) is a Pakistani community-engaged visual artist and maker of crafts. She grew up in Karachi and currently lives on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe\, Haudenosaunee\, and Attawandaron peoples\, in Cambridge Ontario. \nShe comes from a lineage of women who crafted with what they had\, appreciated and grew plants\, and valued the lives and stories of materials. She creates paints\, dyes\, and sculptural pieces with plants\, rocks\, shells\, and reclaimed fabrics while exploring our layered relationships with materials. She co-leads Reth aur Reghistan with her sister Manahil\, a multidisciplinary arts project that engages with folklore from Sindh through artmaking and poetry.

SUMMARY:Go-Boy! Memories of a Life Behind Bars: Screening and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Screen Go-Boy! Memories of a Life Behind Bars at Guelph Civic Museum\, followed by a Q&A with director Rob Lindsay and P. Brian Skerrett\, guest-curator of the exhibition Darkness and Light: Inside the Ontario Reformatory\, on view now at the Civic Museum. \nReserve free tickets on Eventbrite. \nFor over 100 years\, the Ontario Reformatory/Guelph Correctional Centre was embedded in the lives of the people of Guelph. The exhibition shares stories from within the institution\, addressing misconceptions\, propaganda\, and myths – some perpetuated by the institution itself and recounted in public archives. \nGo-Boy! (2020) is a feature documentary examining the life of Roger Caron\, who was sentenced to the Ontario Reformatory in Guelph in 1954\, at 16 years of age. Caron would spend 24 years of his life in local\, provincial\, and federal prisons across Ontario. While incarcerated\, Caron wrote about his experiences. Published in 1978\, his book would win the 1979 Governor General’s Award for non-fiction\, one of Canada’s highest literary awards. \nIn Go-Boy! filmmaker Rob Lindsay examines how Caron’s book exposed the brutality and depravity of the Canadian prison system and how his words have had a lasting and timeless influence on generations to come. \nGo-Boy! Memories of a Life Behind Bars is produced by Rob Lindsay and Kristine Yanoff and distributed by Paradox Pictures Inc. \nImages (left to right): Caron writing in his cell (The Telegraph\, July 10\, 2012); Caron receiving the Governor General’s Award in 1978 (Liaison: The monthly journal for the criminal justice\, July/August 1985)
