It includes information about migration\, land relationship\, treaties\, impacts of colonization\, and past and present-day perspectives. The display also considers the founding story of Guelph within the context of a longer history lens. \nThis display is a living exhibition that reflects the truth as we understand it today. We continue to learn from our treaty partner\, the Missisaugas of the Credit First Nation\, and from Indigenous people who call Guelph home today. The display will continue to be updated as our knowledge grows.

SUMMARY:Art as We Are: Creative Community Care
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Art Not Shame and Guelph Museums\, Art as We Are: Creative Community Care spotlights three projects centred in collective community-making through art and involving about 200 local creators: Art in Hard Times (2020)\, Art in a Just Recovery (2023)\, and Community Fabric (2024). The exhibition also shares the origin story of Art Not Shame\, a community-engaged\, multidisciplinary arts organization serving youth and adults in Guelph and across Ontario since 2017. \nIn 2020\, artist Melanie Schambach led a team of artists and social support workers in the creation of The Mural Project: Art in Hard Times. Collectively\, they aimed to amplify the voices of those who identified as: newcomers\, LGBTQ21+\, Black\, Indigenous\, people of colour\, street engaged\, adults with developmental exceptionalities\, and youth struggling with mental health and addictions. \nIn 2023\, Art Not Shame\, Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition\, and artist Melanie Schambach collaborated on Art in a Just Recovery: Reconnecting to Us\, a project that explored community care in pandemic recovery. Through a series of in-person and online art-making workshops\, participants were partnered with Art Buddies in creating artworks that came together in a large-scale mural. \nIn 2024\, Art Not Shame\, Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition\, and Guelph Museums collaborated on the Community Fabric project 一 a ten-week community-arts series in which participants worked together to create a community quilt\, build social connections\, and develop skills to support their mental health and wellbeing. The completed quilt will be unveiled in the exhibition Art as We Are: Creative Community Care\, which opened for public viewing on Saturday\, August 24.

SUMMARY:Darkness and Light: Inside the Ontario Reformatory
DESCRIPTION:For over 100 years\, the Ontario Reformatory/Guelph Correctional Centre was imbedded in lives of the people of Guelph. The exhibition shares stories from within the institution\, addressing misconceptions\, propaganda\, and myths – some perpetuated by the institution itself and recounted in public archives. \nOfficially opened in 1911\, the Ontario Reformatory evolved to be many things\, including the Guelph Correctional Centre from 1972 until its decommission in 2003. The historical record of the property and institution is vast and only partially preserved. There are more stories to tell and many lesser-known aspects of the history to explore. \nThe reformatory was a place of duality: from reform intentions\, which aimed to improve the lives of those who were incarcerated\, to being one of Canada’s most notorious prisons. Despite the lack of humanity within the institution\, some inmates and staff held hope\, creativity\, and a vision for life beyond the cell walls. \nThe history of the Ontario Reformatory/Guelph Correctional Centre is complex and uncomfortable. DESCRIPTION:Tales from the Hill is presented by the Guelph Guild of Storytellers and features a guest teller in addition to Guild tellers. The evening includes hot cider\, light refreshments\, and conversation. Guests are invited to register a telling or participate during the open mic storytelling. \nTales from the Hill runs on the second Wednesday or Thursday of each month from October to May. \nGuests can arrive at 6:30 pm for casual socializing\, call to order at 7:00 pm for storytelling\, followed by time for more visits.

SUMMARY:Explore the Reformatory Grounds Walking Tour with P. Brian Skerrett
DESCRIPTION:Join a guided tour of the Ontario Reformatory grounds\, led by P. Brian Skerrett\, guest-curator of the exhibition Darkness and Light: Inside the Ontario Reformatory\, on view now at Guelph Civic Museum. \nFor over 100 years\, the Ontario Reformatory/Guelph Correctional Centre was embedded in the lives of the people of Guelph. Explore the site during this walking tour\, starting at Willowbank Hall\, constructed in 1915 as the Engineers Residence\, and continuing through the Beaux-Arts landscape envisioned by Architect John Lyle. Discover watercourses and ponds built by prison labour. Walk past field stone walls to multi-level terraces behind the 1923 Superintendents’ House. The tour will pause briefly at the main entrance of the Administration Building\, walk around to the guard tower and then proceed to the Chapel\, the last inmate-built building on the property\, before returning to Willowbank. \nThe walk will take approximately 60 minutes at a moderate pace. Much\, but not all the route is paved and on an incline. Please wear comfortable shoes. SUMMARY:Sacred Space: Intuitive Nature Sculptures
DESCRIPTION:Sacred spaces are deeply rooted in our lineages as interfaces of our spirits with a place\, an ancestor\, or the divine. They can be anywhere from a woven textile\, a body of water\, a bedroom wall\, or a built structure where community gathers. They are as much an external space rich in meaning as they an internal release\, a place of belonging\, or a connection with kin. \nThis workshop draws from folklore and stories to look at what is held sacred to communities across different cultures\, tensions around the co-opted or appropriated\, and how we can reimagine sacred spaces in uncertain times.\nWe will use materials gathered from the land such as dried flowers\, moss\, seeds and driftwood as well as reclaimed South-Asian fabric\, to create intuitive sculptural pieces that can either live within or remind us of our sacred space.\nAll materials will be provided\, however you are welcome to bring a mug or vessel to create your world in\, along with any materials of personal significance that you would like to incorporate — a rock\, a piece of fabric\, a dried flower\, or a remnant of a place or person. \nThis workshop is suitable for ages 16+. Registration required on Eventbrite.\nPlease feel free to bring your own snacks. \nArtist Bio\nNimra (she/her) is a Pakistani community-engaged visual artist and maker of crafts. She grew up in Karachi and currently lives on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe\, Haudenosaunee\, and Attawandaron peoples\, in Cambridge Ontario. \nShe comes from a lineage of women who crafted with what they had\, appreciated and grew plants\, and valued the lives and stories of materials. She creates paints\, dyes\, and sculptural pieces with plants\, rocks\, shells\, and reclaimed fabrics while exploring our layered relationships with materials. She co-leads Reth aur Reghistan with her sister Manahil\, a multidisciplinary arts project that engages with folklore from Sindh through artmaking and poetry.

Dr. Brickley will offer an inside look at her groundbreaking research and invite the community into a thoughtful conversation about the future of the remains once the study is complete. Internationally recognized for her pioneering work on historical health and skeletal analysis\, she specializes in uncovering how disease\, diet\, and social conditions have shaped human lives over time.
