Verese and Sammy Duke will showcase their musical talents\, so get ready to jingle all the way! \nGet your tickets on Eventbrite now! \nAbout Verese Vassell-Bowen\nVerese Vassell-Bowen is a singer\, songwriter and recording artist based in Guelph\, Ontario. She graced the Canadian gospel scene in 2016 with her debut album\, Forever Praise. This project blends a cmbination of Traditional\, Cntemporary\, Neo Soul and even Spoken Word into a soul-stirring musical work\, Her single I AM Enough released in 2020 after the racialized uprising in the US takes you on a spiritual journey from pain to praise. \nAs a songwriter\, Verese was one of four artists who collaborated on writing the song Freedom Marching which featured vocals of over 40 racialized recording artists across Canada. Verese served as the Artiste Director for the Guelph Black Heritage Society Juneteenth Celebration 2021. \nCheck her out on Youtube! \nA note to guests\nDue to high demand for seating\, please arrive at the Museum and take your seat by 6:50 pm. SUMMARY:Reading Between The Rows: In Conversation with Our Waters
DESCRIPTION:Teioháte Kaswenta\, or Two Row Wampum\, was made between the Five Nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and early settler-colonial states (1613\, 1664). It symbolized ‘Two Peoples’ – settler and Indigenous – who were to sail down the ‘river of life’ in two separate-but-equal rows. But settlers and Indigenous peoples alike have often straddled boats\, for good or for ill. \nAs we shape our personal and shared journeys\, we must remember that we cannot have Reconciliation without Truth and that we must consider our past and imagine our future at the same time. The exhibition Unsettling the Grand looks at the Grand River as a physical metaphor for the Two Row Wampum. \nJoin us for an evening of conversation with ‘Our Rivers\,’ as told through the perspectives of scholars\, artists\, and community members from both settler-colonial and Indigenous walks-of-life and ways-of-knowing. We ask: How have our rivers changed over time and how have they remained the same? SUMMARY:Military Lecture: From Wartime Refuge to Peaceful Hippie Haven: Generations of Youth on Grindstone Island
DESCRIPTION:Learn how a private island on Big Rideau Lake\, Ontario was presented\, experienced\, and embodied as a refuge for youth endangered by or alarmed by war. Between 1917 and 1963\, the island was the summer home of Admiral Charles Kingsmill and his family. During their tenure\, among many things\, they hosted British child evacuees during the Second World War. Afterwards\, for over a decade\, it was home to a Peace Education Institute and hosted programs attended by the children of peace and civil rights activists in which they considered non-violent solutions to Cold War tensions. Drawing on oral histories and archival documents\, the chapter compares youth’s experiences confronting real and imaginary experiences of war\, while living away from home in the Canadian wilderness. \nFrom Wartime Refuge to Hippie Haven: Generations of Youth on Grindstone Island is presented by Tarah Brookfield.  Preregistration is required to attend in-person. SUMMARY:Fourth Friday: Auri Fell
DESCRIPTION:Every Fourth Friday of the month enjoy free admission to the Civic Museum from 5 to 9 p.m\,  a free concert starting at 7 p.m\, and a cash bar. \nIn addition to performing songs accompanied by piano and ukulele\, Auri’s Fourth Friday solo performance will include the art of live looping\, where she will create entire multi-part arrangements by building percussive and melodic layers using her Loop Station. As a beatboxer\, Auri will use the “drum kit in her mouth” to create an amazing variety of percussive sounds. There will also be an opportunity for audience participation! \nAbout Auri Fell:\nBased in Guelph\, 20 year old Auri Fell is a triple threat – a multi-instrumentalist who sings and beatboxes. She enjoys creating jazzy vocal arrangements and recording many-layered harmonies with accompanying split-screen videos\, which she posts to her YouTube channel and socials @auri_luve. Auri has performed with jazz and vocal ensembles\, choirs\, and in solo gigs at venues such as A Cappella Academy in Los Angeles\, Carnegie Hall in NYC\, the Guelph Jazz Festival\, Hillside Summer Festival\, SING! The Toronto Vocal Arts Festival\, the Rex Hotel and Blues Bar\, and Guelph Pride Festival. Auri is currently a local music teacher and member of Mixology A Cappella in Kitchener\, and intends to pursue music education at a post-secondary level this fall. His grandfather \, Hugh\, served in the Great War and other relatives served in the Second World War with nephews and nieces continuing the tradition. \nBefore coming to Niagara he was involved with the Thunder Bay Military Museum and upon relocating to Niagara in 2003\, he immediately contacted persons who were trying to establish the Niagara Military Museum. The Niagara Military Museum opened its doors in November 2012 with Doherty as Curator. At present he is Curator and President of the Niagara Military Museum \nDoherty retired from Ontario Power Generation in 2009 where he worked as an Environment and Health Technician at the Niagara Plant Group after moving to Niagara from the Northwest Plant Group \n  \n

SUMMARY:Folklore: Being and Belonging in the Grand River Region\, before and after 1827
DESCRIPTION:Folkloric practices – beliefs and customs passed through generations\, often by oral traditions – have been shared through stories and storytellers in this place\, long before it was known as Guelph. \nAt the turn of the 19th century\, the Grand River region comprised both Indigenous and settler communities\, including the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Six Nations Confederacy (Seneca\, Cayuga\, Onondaga\, Oneida\, Mohawk\, and Tuscarora)\, as well as Black Loyalists (both free and enslaved peoples who sought refuge in Canada after the American Revolution) and Scottish colonists\, among other European settlers. \nExploring relationships with land\, water\, and weather; food\, plants\, and medicine; language\, stories\, and teaching; music and dance; crafting and creating; and societal roles and community gathering\, this exhibition examines communication and conflict among local cultural\, geographic\, and spiritual communities\, before and after 1827. \nThrough stories\, belongings\, and creative expressions of the past\, we witness the evolution of everyday life in the place we now call Guelph\, and draw connections to present-day lived experiences. SUMMARY:Pysanky: Ukranian art of wax painting on eggs
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: The workshop is currently SOLD OUT. However\, you can still add your name to the waitlist.  \nJoin us for a workshop on pysanky\, the Ukrainian art of wax painting on eggs! \nPysanka is part of Ukrainian cultural identity and a symbol of a new life. This two-hour art workshop is led by Ukrainian newcomers Olha and Nataliia\, carriers of Ukrainian culture.  Participants will work with melted wax and dyes as they decorate an egg in Ukrainian technique with a tool known as a “pysachok” to create patterns and motifs. Every pysanka is packed with meaning and carries great cultural significance. Nataliia and Olha will highlight Ukrainian ethnic design principles and basic colour theory while encouraging participants to experiment with the wax and applied colors\, to create a very unique piece of art to keep. \nAll materials and tools for use during the workshop are provided. Participants will have the option to purchase a set of tools to repeat the process at home for $35 (cash only). Preregistration on Eventbrite is required. \n About the artists: \nOlha and Nataliia arrived in Canada in 2022. Self-taught artists\, they promote Ukrainian authentic culture. Since their arrival in Canada\, they have offered workshops within the Stand with Ukraine Guelph organization.

DESCRIPTION:Galleries and museums collect objects and information. Data about the object\, maker\, origin\, material\, and cultural significance is integral to building collections. However\, these practices are rooted in colonial structures that continue to misrepresent and misuse Indigenous histories. \nUnderstanding “sovereignty” – the human right to “hold sovereignty” – is a critical act of dismantling colonial collecting practices. This workshop will explore visual art and cultural objects as data. Participants will delve into the meaning of Indigenous data sovereignty including intellectual property rights and digital data collection. These understandings can help individuals and institutions to interact and build with collections through a decolonial lens. \nNote: This is a joint event between Ontario Galleries and Guelph Museums

SUMMARY:Alchemy Embroidery – Collaboratively Altering Paper with Needle and Thread
DESCRIPTION:The history of a society or an individual can be told through textiles\, and these narratives may not be present in other historical records. The only trace of a life lived may be found on an embroidered piece of cloth.  Embroidery has enormous cultural significances being valued as an expressive medium in many cultures and becoming a storehouse of art and the emotions and history that can be associated with it. \nIn this workshop you will be introduced to embroidery stitches that will be applied to paper which can be delicate\, fragile\, easily torn\, pierced and mended. \nOver 3 hours which will start with demonstrations and practice\, we will work together and restore a purposely damaged print\, bringing shards of paper and ink together to create a collaborative new version of a work of art on paper. \nThis workshop is part of a series that will connect community to chat and share creative time using needle\, thread and paper as the catalysts and leading to an all participants event during the 2024 Culture Days in September to exhibit and present our restored works of art. \nEveryone is welcomed to join in\, no matter what your level of stitching might be. \nThe workshop costs just $10.00 which covers a generous kit of supplies you keep. Preregistration is required. Tickets will be available on Eventbrite soon. \nAbout The Instructor\nMary Kroetsch’s practice is research-creational integrating mixed methods of making to push and explore the problems arising from limitations and disconnects that happen when many layers impact surfaces\, production\, and fabrication. \nShe obtained Certification in Textile Surface Design from the Haliburton School of the Arts\, studied Visual Arts Foundations at Central Tech Art School\, Toronto\, and completed the Ontario Arts Council’s Artist-Educator Foundations Course. \nShe completed her Studio Arts Degree with the University of Guelph\, Ontario in 2023. \nHer work has recently been part of exhibitions at the Elora Centre for the Arts (Elora\, Ontario) the Propeller Art Gallery\, (Toronto\, Ontario)\, the Boarding House Gallery\, (Guelph\, Ontario)\, and the 2020 Ateliers Kitchen Print Biennial\, (Charmes\, France). \nMary’s works are part of private and public collections including St. Michael’s Hospital\, (Toronto\, Ontario)\, the Ilkley Museum\, (Yorkshire\, England) and the CAMAC Centre for Art and Technology\, (Marnay\, France).

SUMMARY:Military Lecture: "It was hell\, that's all": Artillery and the Senses in the Canadian Corps\, 1914-1918
DESCRIPTION:The First World War on the Western Front was overwhelmingly a war of artillery. Both sides’ firepower dictated what form the war would take\, driving men to dig trenches to conceal and protect themselves\, but even then\, artillery was responsible for over half of Canadian casualties. Given the significance of its role\, it is no surprise that the letters\, diaries and memoirs of soldiers make frequent reference to the unending roar of the guns and the damage wrought by shellfire. \nBut what was it like to fight with the artillery? Though stationed further from the front lines than the infantry\, gunners underwent many of the same experiences and faced many of the same risks. They\, too\, struggled to fight a war against enemies they couldn’t see\, learned how to use sound as a tool for self-preservation and were frequent targets of enemy guns. Despite these commonalities\, however\, the ways in which gunners understood the war and their role within it could vary drastically from their infantry counterparts. Using the senses — namely vision\, hearing and touch — this presentation explores the lives of Canadian gunners and demonstrates the ongoing need to look beyond the trenches in order to better understand the diverse experiences of Canadians fighting the First World War \n“It was hell\, that’s all”: Artillery and Senses in the Canadian Corps\, 1914-1918 is presented by Hazel Scott Pankratz. NOTE: Preregistration is not required.  \nAbout The Artist:\nBob MacLean is a Folksinger and Guitarist with roots in Cape Breton (Glace Bay) and Quebec.  He’s best known for his guitar work\, folksinging\, arranging of traditional East Coast & U.K. songs/tunes\, playing with various duos including MacTalla Road with Carole Pines\, and hosting ceilidh/sessions.  \nThe guitar\, and more recently the octave mandolin\, have all figured prominently in his compositions and his arranging traditional songs and tunes. Bob also frequently holds workshops on key aspects of guitar playing.

SUMMARY:Military Lecture: The Royal Canadian Air Force at 100: A material retrospective with Mike Bechthold
DESCRIPTION:In 1968\, the RCAF Flyers\, winners of the 1948 Olympic Gold Medal for ice hockey\, reunited for a charity game. Here\, the vice chief of the defence staff\, Lieutenant-General F.R. Sharpe speaks with four members of the team: Lieutenant-Colonel Hubert Brooks\, Chief Warrant Officer Andy Gilpin\, Sergeant Red Gravelle\, and Captain Frank Boucher. The jersey worn by Gravelle in this photo is now in the collection of the National Air Force Museum. \nThe Royal Canadian Air Forces marks a centenary of service this year. This lecture examines the rich history of the air force through the lens of objects selected from the collections of some of the exceptional RCAF museums located across the country. Many of these items appear innocuous at first glance – a wooden spoon\, baby booties\, a plexiglass ring\, and a battered old suitcase – but we will use these objects as a window into the remarkable history of the RCAF. That wooden spoon was carved by the “Savior of Ceylon” while he was in a Japanese prisoner of war camp; the baby booties belonged to one of Canada’s outstanding Battle of Britain pilots; the ring was a gift to a young woman who was on the “front lines” of Canada’s essential role training aircrew in the Second World War; and the suitcase tells the story of a Canadian fighter pilot who disappeared over North Africa\, never to be found. Learn about these untold stories and much more. \nThe Royal Canadian Air Force at 100: A material retrospective is presented by Mike Bechthold. The lecture will premiere in-person at the Civic Museum\, and online via our Facebook livestream. Preregistration is not required. The recorded conversation will be available on Facebook\, YouTube\, and our Museum Everywhere Portal.  Guelph Museums’ Military Lecture series is presented in partnership with the Laurier Centre for the Study of Canada. \nWatch The Recordings:\n\n\nAbout Mike Bechthold\nMike Bechthold holds a PhD in History from the University of New South Wales\, Canberra\, Australia and an MA & Honours BA from Wilfrid Laurier University\, Waterloo\, Ontario\, Canada. Mike is the author or editor of eight books and numerous articles. His most recent monograph is Flying to Victory: Raymond Collishaw and the Western Desert Campaign (University of Oklahoma Press\, 2017) and he is the co-author of a series of guidebooks about the Canadian battlefields of the Second World War. He specializes in the fields of military air power (especially tactical air operations in the First and Second World Wars)\, the Canadian army in Normandy and Northwest Europe\, and the Canadian Corps in the Great War. \nMike was recently employed as a historian with the Royal Canadian Air Force History and Heritage section. He has taught history at Wilfrid Laurier University\, the University of Waterloo\, Conestoga College\, and the Schulich School of Business at York University. For 22 years Mike worked as the Communications Director of the Laurier Centre for Military Strategic and Disarmament Studies and the Managing Editor of Canadian Military History\, an academic quarterly journal. Mike is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in the UK\, a Fellow of the Gregg Centre for the Study of War and Society at the University of New Brunswick\, a Research Fellow at Nipissing University Centre for the Study of War\, Atrocity\, and Genocide\, and he recently served as the Executive Director of the Juno Beach Centre Association. \n

SUMMARY:Alchemy Embroidery - Collaboratively Altering Paper with Needle and Thread
DESCRIPTION:The history of a society or an individual can be told through textiles\, and these narratives may not be present in other historical records. The only trace of a life lived may be found on an embroidered piece of cloth.  Embroidery has enormous cultural significances being valued as an expressive medium in many cultures and becoming a storehouse of art and the emotions and history that can be associated with it. \nIn this workshop you will be introduced to embroidery stitches that will be applied to paper which can be delicate\, fragile\, easily torn\, pierced and mended. \nOver 3 hours which will start with demonstrations and practice\, we will work together and restore a purposely damaged print\, bringing shards of paper and ink together to create a collaborative new version of a work of art on paper. \nThis workshop is part of a series that will connect community to chat and share creative time using needle\, thread and paper as the catalysts and leading to an all participants event during the 2024 Culture Days in September to exhibit and present our restored works of art. \nEveryone is welcomed to join in\, no matter what your level of stitching might be. \nThe workshop costs just $10.00 which covers a generous kit of supplies you keep. Preregistration is required. Tickets are available on Eventbrite. \nAbout The Instructor\nMary Kroetsch’s practice is research-creational integrating mixed methods of making to push and explore the problems arising from limitations and disconnects that happen when many layers impact surfaces\, production\, and fabrication. \nShe obtained Certification in Textile Surface Design from the Haliburton School of the Arts\, studied Visual Arts Foundations at Central Tech Art School\, Toronto\, and completed the Ontario Arts Council’s Artist-Educator Foundations Course. \nShe completed her Studio Arts Degree with the University of Guelph\, Ontario in 2023. \nHer work has recently been part of exhibitions at the Elora Centre for the Arts (Elora\, Ontario) the Propeller Art Gallery\, (Toronto\, Ontario)\, the Boarding House Gallery\, (Guelph\, Ontario)\, and the 2020 Ateliers Kitchen Print Biennial\, (Charmes\, France). \nMary’s works are part of private and public collections including St. Michael’s Hospital\, (Toronto\, Ontario)\, the Ilkley Museum\, (Yorkshire\, England) and the CAMAC Centre for Art and Technology\, (Marnay\, France).

SUMMARY:Fourth Friday: Tracy Cain
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a stirring exploration of Black Canadian history with a special edition of our Fourth Friday concert series. Tracy Cain\, a Guelph-based descendant of Freedom Seekers\, shares her journey through music and video in “And Then What Happened…” Cain\, a 5th generation Black Canadian\, has delved into her rich heritage\, uncovering stories of resilience and tenacity passed down through generations. Through an interactive presentation\, Cain will guide us on a poignant musical voyage\, celebrating the courageous journey of Black Canadian pioneers who sought freedom in Canada via the Underground Railroad. This performance beautifully complements our current exhibition ‘Folklore: Being and Belonging in the Grand River Region\, before and after 1827’\, where stories of the Back Loyalists shine as one of the key narratives. \nThe performance will be 60-75 mins with no interval. \nEvery Fourth Friday of the month enjoy free admission to the Civic Museum from 5 to 9 pm and  a free performance starting at 7 pm. \nCash bar. NOTE: Preregistration is not required.
