SUMMARY:Where The Rivers Meet
DESCRIPTION:Where The Rivers Meet is a display within the City Gallery that centers the Original Peoples who have been on this land since time immemorial. It includes information about migration\, land relationship\, treaties\, impacts of colonization\, and past and present-day perspectives. The display also considers the founding story of Guelph within the context of a longer history lens. \nThis display is a living exhibition that reflects the truth as we understand it today. We continue to learn from our treaty partner\, the Missisaugas of the Credit First Nation\, and from Indigenous people who call Guelph home today. The display will continue to be updated as our knowledge grows.

SUMMARY:Maawnjidyang Maa – We come together here
DESCRIPTION:Maawnjidyang Maa – We come together here \nWhat does it mean to be “here” in Guelph\, where the Speed and Eramosa rivers meet? How do we engage in this place with all our relations— past\, present\, and future? \nThis exhibition\, within the museum and at sites around the city\, invites us to re-story Guelph through Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee ways of knowing. These stories help connect us to the lands\, waters\, and communities\, who have always been\, and always will be\, here. \nThe Maple tree\, a first responder and guardian of plant relations\, lives on the hill overlooking the city. Guiding us to consider contact zones between Indigenous Peoples and settlers\, the Maple counteracts the founding story of Guelph\, which is often mythologized in the felling of a maple tree. \nVisitors to the hilltop can interact with plants that are Indigenous to “here” along with the teachings they carry. The exhibition within the museum features the work of contemporary Indigenous artists\, who uniquely express the interconnection of life forms. \nThe digital work of the late Anishinaabe Elder\, visual and performing artist\, and author Rene Meshake\, a longtime Guelph resident\, speaks to Indigeneity in the local cityscape. \nWeaving together both traditional and contemporary materials\, Saugeen First Nation visual artist Emily Kewageshig explores cyclical themes of birth\, death\, and rebirth. \nBeing “here” at the junction of the Speed and Eramosa rivers is activated through the work of Kahnyen’kehàka multidisciplinary artist and dancer Santee Smith. Through her use of clay\, Smith embodies the rivers\, evoking the Sacred Feminine\, expressing a deep connection to the Earth\, and affirming the ongoing presence of Indigenous identity on the land. \nIn collaboration with Gayagohó:nǫ’ visual artist Alex Jacobs-Blum\, the future of “here” is celebrated in the artwork of Indigenous youth who call Guelph home. These emerging artists share their relationships to place\, the rivers\, and the importance of protecting the water for future generations. \nFrom March 2026 to February 2027\, sites of kinship between the hilltop and the rivers will be activated by Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee knowledge carriers. Curated by the Decolonizing Place Narratives Research Collective in collaboration with Guelph Museums and Culture\, City of Guelph.

SUMMARY:Military Lecture: Love & War–From the front and the home fronts
DESCRIPTION:Susan Brown\, joined by Blair Janzen\, presents the real stories of her parents\, which have been compiled into a book titled “Love and War” as an epistolary narrative. The narrative is based on 400 letters between Brown’s parents and grandparents\, detailing their experiences as medical personnel in England\, North Africa\, and Italy during the Second World War. Their accounts are fascinating in terms of their roles and life in the military. These are real stories. A doctor and nurse from Guelph who reunite overseas and marry in England. Deployment to North Africa is her future; his is deployment to Italy. Their military roles bring them close to a variety of battlefronts in all three areas. It’s a loving memoir wrapped in adventure. The poignancy in war is revealed in several stories: the unknown graves in an Italian town\, managing allied soldiers dietary and religious needs in a medical setting\, paying POWs in food for services\, and the gratitude of occupied populations for medical support. \nDoors open at 6:30 p.m. and the presentation starts at 7 p.m.\, followed by a question period. \nThe lecture premiered in-person at the Civic Museum. The recorded conversation will be available on YouTube\, and our Museum Everywhere Portal. Guelph Museums’ Military Lecture series is presented in partnership with the Laurier Centre for the Study of Canada. \nWatch The Recording\n\nAbout the Presenters\n \nSusan Brown is the second daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Pinch. She is a retired nurse and founder and CEO of Robertson-Brown Healthcare Services in Kitchener\, Ontario. She presently resides in Guelph. \n \nBlair Janzen is a graduate of the University of Guelph\, an employee of Guelph Museums\, and is currently a Teacher Candidate studying at Wilfred Laurier University.

SUMMARY:War and Peace: Songs and Monologues
DESCRIPTION:What are the causes of war? Is war simply human nature? Is the goal of world peace realistic? Culchahworks Artistic Director Andrew Craig (aka Rhapsodius) presents a one-act show that poses these questions and more\, and offers possible answers. War and Peace: Songs and Monologues features some of the greatest songs about war and peace composed in the 20th century\, by artists such as Stevie Wonder\, Marvin Gaye\, Bob Dylan\, John Lennon\, and Bob Marley. Rhapsodius weaves together these songs with deeply considered monologues that draw equally from the ancient writings of Sun Tzu as well as from contemporary authors such as Gwynne Dyer\, Margaret McMillan\, Pema Chodron and the Dalai Lama. War and Peace: Songs and Monologues aims to educate\, enlighten\, uplift and inspire in equal measure\, and leave you with the sense that a peaceful world is indeed possible\, and that we can co-create it. \nCo-presented with Guelph Museums and Guelph Black Heritage Society. \nTickets at www.warandpeace.show

SUMMARY:Guelph Film Festival: Short Series II: Stand With Me
DESCRIPTION:This international short film showcase looks at support\, solidarity\, and community in times of upheaval\, war\, and environmental or social change. \nINTERNATIONAL | 78 min | Partial Subtitles\nTickets: $15/PWYW\nCo-presented by Guelph Museums and Ed Video \nTickets available via Guelph Film Festival. \nAbout the Films\n \nand the story remains\nDarya Maljesi | CANADA | 6 min\n*World Premiere* \nAfter years of silence\, a woman returns to a memory she was once forbidden to recall. As she develops forgotten images\, the past surfaces in fragments of light\, grain\, and the slow emergence of a face. The film lingers between past and present\, exploring whether enforced silence can wound more deeply than the trauma itself. \n \nEighteen Mill Street\nJosh Weissbach | SWEDEN | 14 min \nEIGHTEEN MILL STREET introduces Ukrainian artists Marianna Tarish and Nikita Gryshko soon after their relocation to Sweden because of the Russian invasion of  Ukraine. The film explores Tarish and Gryshko’s relationships to intimate spaces and how they have been impacted due to their experiences at the start of the war while still living in the Ukrainian city of Kherson and as part of their journey to Sweden. \n \nListen \nMalakye Tsosie ⋅ USA ⋅ 16 min \nThere are fewer fluent speakers of Díne Bizaad (the Navajo Language) on the Navajo Nation. \nDespite this\, there is hope for the future\, thanks to a local radio station that broadcasts in Navajo to thousands of listeners every day. Notably\, the director embarks on a journey that highlights the language’s resilience\, encountering revitalization efforts on the reservation and finding hope for future generations to protect it. \n \nAXOMAMA \nTracy Valcárcel | CANADA | 26 min \nAXOMAMA follows the life of Alberto and his relatives\, a family of potato custodians in the Peruvian Andes. The film weaves a parallel between the potato’s journey and the narrator’s complex tracing of her own origins\, grappling with questions of identity and belonging. From a sacred tuber to one of the world’s most ubiquitous foods\, the humble potato emerges as both metaphor and mirror of resistance in the face of survived displacement. \n \nFragment on War\nNikolas Candido | BRAZIL | 15 min \nSinger-songwriter Cassidy Waring has long used music to process trauma. Now\, as she prepares to release If I Had Only Been Better\, an album inspired by her past\, she returns to Calgary to confront the family tragedy that shaped her life. Joined by her younger brother\, she seeks answers from those who knew their family. Blending raw conversations\, home videos\, and music\, Hearse Chasing explores grief\, resilience\, and the healing power of art. \nAbout the Directors\n \nDarya Maljesi\nI came to cinema through documentary\, where my language began to take form in the encounter with the real. The movement between reality\, imagination\, and history mirrors how I experience the world as embodied\, unstable\, and deeply felt. Drawing from theatre and nonfiction practice\, I work with memory\, witnessing\, and fragile images to explore how personal experience intersects with political and emotional landscapes. \nFilmmaking\, for me\, is not just an art form but a way of staying alive to the world \, a sensory and ethical practice of attention\, intimacy\, and becoming. \n \nJosh Weissbach\nJosh Weissbach is an experimental filmmaker. His films have been shown worldwide in such venues as Ann Arbor Film Festival\, Light Field\, Courtisane Festival\, European Media Art Festival\, 25 FPS Festival\, First Look at Museum of the Moving Image\, Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival\, Festival dei Popoli\, and Festival des Cinémas Différents et Expérimentaux de Paris. He has won jury prizes at Ithaca Experimental\, Montreal Underground\, Videoex\, ICDOCS\, Onion City Experimental Film and Video Festival\, and Berlin Revolution Film Festival. He is the recipient of a 2021 Artistic Excellence Award from the Connecticut Office of the Arts\, a 2020 Moving Image Fund Early Development Grant from the LEF Foundation\, a 2018 LightPress Grant from the Interbay Cinema Society\, a 2015 LEF Fellowship from the Robert Flaherty Film Seminar\, a 2013 Mary L. Nohl Fellowship for Emerging Artists from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation\, and a 2008 Cary Grant Film Award from the Princess Grace Foundation-USA. A selection of Josh’s films is in distribution at Light Cone in Paris\, France. \n \nMalakye Tsosie\nMalakye Tsosie\, who is from the Navajo Nation\, aims to tell honest\, unapologetic stories that reflect his cultural identity. He wants to join a group of storytellers who honor and connect with people’s stories and truths. \n \nTracy Valcárcel\nAXOMAMA follows the life of Alberto and his relatives\, a family of potato custodians in the Peruvian Andes. SUMMARY:Military Lecture: Canada's Missing of the Great War 1914-1918 and Modern Discovery
DESCRIPTION:The announcements\, once infrequent\, are a monthly occurrence now. It is a sad or pleasing reality depending on your perspective\, that after more than a century\, the fields of France and Belgium are surrendering an increasing number of Canadian soldiers of the Great War. It was inevitable with the expansion of housing and industry into the old battlefields combined with large infrastructure projects that cut through the heart of battlefields where intense fighting once took place. \nThrough writing and research\, Glenn Kerr seeks to shine a light into a chapter of Canadian and Commonwealth history where the soldiers and closest loved ones can no longer speak for themselves. How is our modern world dealing with these new logistical challenges and the endless sensitive considerations for soldiers whose closest family members have also passed into memory? More than a century after the Armistice\, the missing of the Great War have reappeared in modern memory and their descendants are waiting and watching as protectorates of that memory. \nDoors open at 6:30 p.m. and the presentation starts at 7 p.m.\, followed by a question period. \nThe lecture premieres in-person at the Civic Museum. The recorded conversation will be available on YouTube\, and our Museum Everywhere Portal. Guelph Museums’ Military Lecture series is presented in partnership with the Laurier Centre for the Study of Canada. \nAbout Glenn Kerr\n \nChairman of the Central Ontario Branch of the Western Front Association \nNational Award-Winning Freelance Historical Writer and Researcher \nAwarded the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers by the Governor General of Canada for historical contributions to Canada and connecting families with their past. \nEditor and Publisher of Maple Leaf Magazine -An internationally circulated periodical devoted to Canada’s legacy of sacrifice and achievement during the First World War and beyond. \nBattlefield explorer.
