DESCRIPTION:Where The Rivers Meet is a display within the City Gallery that centers the Original Peoples who have been on this land since time immemorial. It includes information about migration\, land relationship\, treaties\, impacts of colonization\, and past and present-day perspectives. The display also considers the founding story of Guelph within the context of a longer history lens. \nThis display is a living exhibition that reflects the truth as we understand it today. We continue to learn from our treaty partner\, the Missisaugas of the Credit First Nation\, and from Indigenous people who call Guelph home today. The display will continue to be updated as our knowledge grows.

SUMMARY:Maawnjidyang Maa – We come together here
DESCRIPTION:Maawnjidyang Maa – We come together here \nWhat does it mean to be “here” in Guelph\, where the Speed and Eramosa rivers meet? How do we engage in this place with all our relations— past\, present\, and future? \nThis exhibition\, within the museum and at sites around the city\, invites us to re-story Guelph through Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee ways of knowing. These stories help connect us to the lands\, waters\, and communities\, who have always been\, and always will be\, here. \nThe Maple tree\, a first responder and guardian of plant relations\, lives on the hill overlooking the city. Guiding us to consider contact zones between Indigenous Peoples and settlers\, the Maple counteracts the founding story of Guelph\, which is often mythologized in the felling of a maple tree. \nVisitors to the hilltop can interact with plants that are Indigenous to “here” along with the teachings they carry. The exhibition within the museum features the work of contemporary Indigenous artists\, who uniquely express the interconnection of life forms. \nThe digital work of the late Anishinaabe Elder\, visual and performing artist\, and author Rene Meshake\, a longtime Guelph resident\, speaks to Indigeneity in the local cityscape. \nWeaving together both traditional and contemporary materials\, Saugeen First Nation visual artist Emily Kewageshig explores cyclical themes of birth\, death\, and rebirth. \nBeing “here” at the junction of the Speed and Eramosa rivers is activated through the work of Kahnyen’kehàka multidisciplinary artist and dancer Santee Smith. Through her use of clay\, Smith embodies the rivers\, evoking the Sacred Feminine\, expressing a deep connection to the Earth\, and affirming the ongoing presence of Indigenous identity on the land. \nIn collaboration with Gayagohó:nǫ’ visual artist Alex Jacobs-Blum\, the future of “here” is celebrated in the artwork of Indigenous youth who call Guelph home. These emerging artists share their relationships to place\, the rivers\, and the importance of protecting the water for future generations. \nFrom March 2026 to February 2027\, sites of kinship between the hilltop and the rivers will be activated by Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee knowledge carriers. Curated by the Decolonizing Place Narratives Research Collective in collaboration with Guelph Museums and Culture\, City of Guelph. \n  \n \nMaawnjidyang Maa – Nous nous réunissons ici \nQue signifie être « ici » à Guelph\, à la rencontre des rivières Speed et Eramosa? Comment habitons-nous ce lieu avec toutes nos relations\, passées\, présentes et futures? \nCette exposition\, présentée au musée et dans divers sites à travers la ville\, nous invite à retracer l’histoire de Guelph à travers les savoirs des peuples anishinaabe et haudenosaunee. Leurs récits nous relient aux terres\, aux eaux et aux communautés qui ont toujours été\, et qui seront toujours\, ici. \nL’Érable\, premier intervenant et gardien des relations végétales\, se dresse sur la colline qui surplombe la ville. DESCRIPTION:A breath of fresh air on a summer night! Join us for the final Fourth Friday of the summer as rising star Nora Joy brings her youthful energy and sweet melodies to the Civic Museum patio. \nAdmission by donation starts at 5 p.m. with the concert beginning at 7 p.m. Cash bar available. \nAbout the artist\nNora Joy is a 16-year-old independent singer-songwriter from Stratford\, Ontario\, whose music carries a rare mix of honesty\, warmth and youthful perspective. \nSince beginning songwriting at 11\, Nora has developed a style that blends pop and folk with heartfelt lyrics that reflect the experiences of growing up. \nIn 2024\, Nora was selected as an Ontario Youth Discoveries Competition winner\, earning the privilege of performing at the Summerfolk Festival\, where her performance was highlighted in press coverage as one of the festival’s standouts. \nThat same year\, Nora was personally invited by Canadian icon Ron Sexsmith to join him on stage at his Sexsmith at Sixty concert. She later travelled to London\, UK\, to record backing vocals for Sexsmith’s 2025 album\, Hangover Terrace. \nNora opened for Sexsmith at his 2025 Ontario shows and his 2026 shows in the UK and Ireland.  Sexsmith says\, “at just age 16\, Nora Joy is writing songs that are wonderfully melodic and well-structured with lyrics that are thoughtful and wise beyond her years.” \nNora’s self-titled debut album was released on February 13\, 2026.

SUMMARY:Military Lecture: From the Clouds: The 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion
DESCRIPTION:During the Second World War\, Canada fielded a battalion of super soldiers. They were the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion\, and as part of British 6th Airborne\, they served with distinction in Normandy\, the Low Countries\, and Germany. They were among the first to close the gap between the Allies and the Red Army in May 1945 – and they kept the Soviets from taking Denmark in what could be seen as the first move in the chess game that became the Cold War. \nDoors open at 6:30 p.m. and the presentation starts at 7 p.m.\, followed by a question period. \nThe lecture premieres in-person at the Civic Museum. The recorded conversation will be available on YouTube\, and our Museum Everywhere Portal. Guelph Museums’ Military Lecture series is presented in partnership with the Laurier Centre for the Study of Canada. \nAbout the Presenter\n \nNorma Graham is a retired librarian with a decades-long fascination with military history. Since 2020 she has been studying Canada’s role in the Second World War. At retirement she decided to tell the stories of Canadian airmen\, soldiers\, and sailors that the world never knew and Canadians have largely forgotten. \nGraham has presented on several YouTube channels including WW2TV\, Homebrew History\, and Ham & Jam Airborne History. She recently gave her third presentation at the Canadian Military History Colloquium at Laurier. Graham has been published in Flightlines and Airforce magazines and recently co-authored a paper with Dr. Matthew Barrett which was published in Canadian Military History Journal. She also travelled to the UK in September 2025 and gave a presentation at the We Have Ways of Making You Talk Second World War Festival. \nIn September 2025 she returned to academia and is currently pursuing her MA in History at Laurier University

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Culture Days with song and stories as Brad Woods returns to the Fourth Friday stage with The Rag & Bones Collective – equal parts pub night\, campfire and kitchen party. \nAdmission by donation starts at 5 p.m. with the concert beginning at 7 p.m. Cash bar available. \nAbout the Artist\nBrad Woods has told stories at festivals\, theatres\, conferences\, prisons\, churches and pubs all over North America and the UK. He tells traditional tales\, literary classics and personal stories. His stories have been featured in a variety of broadcasts and publications including CBC Radio 1\, the Globe and Mail and Canadian Running Magazine. Brad has told to all ages and in every type of venue imaginable. He is the recipient of the Alice Kane Award for Storytelling and used it to travel to Lesotho (Southern Africa) to tell\, trade and collect stories on behalf of Bracelet of Hope. \nWoods shares the stage at this performance with The Rag & Bones Collective\, a musical ensemble that injects song into the stories. Sometimes the words lead\, sometimes the melody carries the moment—and together they create a magical listening experience

SUMMARY:Military Lecture: Love & War–From the front and the home fronts
DESCRIPTION:Susan Brown presents the real stories of her parents\, which have been compiled into a book titled “Love and War” as an epistolary narrative. The narrative is based on 400 letters between Brown’s parents and grandparents\, detailing their experiences as medical personnel in England\, North Africa\, and Italy during the Second World War. Their accounts are fascinating in terms of their roles and life in the military. These are real stories. A doctor and nurse from Guelph who reunite overseas and marry in England. Deployment to North Africa is her future; his is deployment to Italy. Their military roles bring them close to a variety of battlefronts in all three areas. It’s a loving memoir wrapped in adventure. The poignancy in war is revealed in several stories: the unknown graves in an Italian town\, managing allied soldiers dietary and religious needs in a medical setting\, paying POWs in food for services\, and the gratitude of occupied populations for medical support. \nDoors open at 6:30 p.m. and the presentation starts at 7 p.m.\, followed by a question period. \nThe lecture premieres in-person at the Civic Museum. Guelph Museums’ Military Lecture series is presented in partnership with the Laurier Centre for the Study of Canada. \nAbout the Presenter\n \nSusan Brown is the second daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Pinch. She is a retired nurse and founder and CEO of Robertson-Brown Healthcare Services in Kitchener\, Ontario. She presently resides in Guelph.
