September 10, 2015, GUELPH, ON: History goes high-tech with the launch of 100 Years of In Flanders Fields Map Journal, a web-based, multi-media experience developed by the City of Guelph’s Information Technology Services in partnership with Guelph Museums.

Launched today, the map journal uses interactive, content-rich maps to trace John McCrae’s life and the experiences that led to his writing of In Flanders Fields 100 years ago.

“This is a very compelling, comprehensive resource for learning about John McCrae, from his early life in Guelph through the medical and military experiences that led to his writing of In Flanders Fields,” says Guelph Museums manager Tammy Adkin. “It is wonderful to see emerging technologies applied to advance understanding of history. The enthusiasm demonstrated by our colleagues in Information Technology Services, who initiated this project, was infectious.”

John McCrae, a Guelph-born doctor, soldier, and poet, penned In Flanders Fields in May 1915, in the midst of the Second Battle of Ypres. The poem, which inspired the rise of the poppy as an enduring symbol of remembrance, continues to resonate around the world 100 years later.
